HOPD- Mitchel Field - New York - 1968. In late September 1942, the 348th Fighter Group, consisting of the 340th, 341st and 342nd Fighter Squadrons was activated at Mitchel Field, Long Island, NY; located on the Hempstead Plains, today it is the home of the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
