Hanging it up for a simple life: It’s complicated
U.S. Air Force Maj. Kiel Gilliland waits with his son, Garrett below a KC-135R Stratotanker piloted by his wife, U.S. Air Force Maj. Sharon Gilliland at Joint Base Mcguire-Dix-Lakehurst on Nov, 5 2015. Sharon Gilliland’s mid-air refueling was specially coordinated between her Air National Guard and his Air Force Reserve units to celebrate her final flight, also called a “fini flight” aboard to KC-135. Gilliland, a pilot for 12 years with the New Jersey Air National Guard’s 108th Wing is ceremonially hosed down by fellow pilots, crewmembers, friends and family as she leaves piloting to others and takes a non-flying job with the 514th AMOS, Air Force Reserve so she can devote more time to her family. During her time in the 108th Wing, Gilliland deployed three times and has 60 combat sorties to her credit. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Master Sgt. Carl Clegg/Released)
