History of the 108th Wing

The 1,200 members of the 108th Wing, New Jersey Air National Guard, fill a multitude of missions at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey.

As a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure initiative, the Wing has recently taken on new roles in the Air National Guard and United States Air Force and consequently, the decision was made to change its name from an "Air Refueling Wing" in 2008. Although the Wing lost one of its air refueling squadrons due to BRAC, new units have been added, changing its makeup and strengthening its positioning in its service to the State and Nation -the 204th Intelligence Squadron and the 150th Maintenance Flight are leading the forefront in these additions. Add in the medical personnel, civil engineers, security forces, supply, operations, communications, personnel, finance and the other Airmen that make up the 108th; the Wing continues to fulfill its missions and goals with excellence.

The Air National Guard as we know it today -- a separate reserve component of the United States Air Force -- was a product of the politics of postwar planning and interservice rivalry during World War II. The men who planned and maneuvered for an independent postwar Air Force during World War II didn't place much faith in the reserves, especially the state-dominated National Guard.

Warren Grove Range History

With its' beginnings as a World War II weapons research location, Warren Grove Range has been part of the New Jersey Air National Guard since the early 1960's. The mission of the range is to provide a quality combat training environment for all military air and ground combat forces.
